The online world is saturated with content. Each day millions of ads, videos and articles are posted. All competing for the same goal.
Attention.
Every single person trying to run a business is competing for it. Who can get the most.
Why is attention so important?
It directly translates to consumer engagement, and the likelihood to take action to buy a product or service.
More Attention=More Money. And that's a good thing.
Grab….Their…Attention…Immediately
For many, the headline is the first (and sometimes only) part of your content they'll see. A good headline can make a lasting impression, enticing your target audience to read more and dive deeper into your content.
It summarizes the theme of your piece, and uses compelling words that make it easy for the reader to digest what they will learn or take away from your piece.
A lot of people think using big and sophisticated words will grab the attention, however if the headline can not be easily understood, most people will give up and keep scrolling.
Be brief and don't stretch the truth in your headline. Short, concise, and clear titles make it a lot easier for the reader to understand what you are trying to say. If a headline is to vague or generic, it won't provide enough value for the audience to want to click and read further
Think about the one point you want the reader to walk away with and make it clear and impossible to miss. The best content is the content with a purpose and it's crucial that your reader can see that from the start.
Cleverness must be clear
People enjoy wordplay; however, the concept needs to be relevant and easy to understand.
Headlines, just like stories, should be infused with voice, style, and creativity. Be cautious of overly clever headlines. A pun or cultural joke is fun to write but is it needed?
Will people get it immediately?
Or will they spend too much time trying to understand it and lose interest with the content?
Write a headline that would grab your own attention
We are all consumers of information and goods, so your own reaction can be a good barometer.
Imagine……
Your doomscrooling late at night- as so many of us are these days. Most of the time not even paying attention to the things we see. Would your headline get you to stop and read further?
Curiosity is a very strong driving force that should be tapped into, headlines that use vivid imagery or metaphors are compelling and most of the time, evokes desire to read on and find out more about the problem or solution that you hint at.
“Three simple tricks that will boost your sales”
“Make sure you're not making these mistakes when it comes to your meta ads”.
“Attracting clients without spending a fortune”
All of these headlines make you ask questions. How can you do that? Or what mistakes are those?
These questions get the audience curious about what you know and how it can fix their problem.
Create just enough sense of mystery from the first glance that it drives readers to find out more.
While curiosity is very effective, it's important to avoid using clickbait headlines, which can disappoint the reader if the content doesn't deliver.
Create a sense of urgency
Most people have terrible FOMO. They hate missing out on great opportunities
Urgency compels readers to look at your article so they don’t miss out. It is effective to include something that can be a simple mistake.
“Are you losing sales by giving your customers too many options”?
“This meta ad option is stealing your revenue.”
This rule might not apply to every piece of content, but where appropriate, it is extremely effective. Give your customer a reason to read on, and if they don't do it now, they will miss out on something very important to them.
Wrapping things up
Why is it that some articles do better than others?
It’s because writers take the time to look the blog post over and fine tune the elements of good content. This includes optimizing the headline.
You should always think about which headline will grab your audience's attention the most and ensure it describes your content in an authentic, enticing way.
Once you have a winning headline, you will command attention across your blog post, emails, book chapters, and even videos.
The essence of writing great headlines is to build a promise that will tickle the interest of your readers.
Achieving this is all about being clear, specific, intriguing, and emotionally resonant. Consistently applying these strategies and you’ll notice readers engage more and stick around longer.
Write like you're breaking down doors, or storming the beaches.
Take charge of your writing and language and watch your sales soar.
